The plight of elephants in captivity and the wild is getting much-needed attention at exposure. HBO will premier the new documentary “An Apology to Elephants”

on Monday, April 22. Narrated by the great Lily Tomlin, who has worked with IDA‘s elephant campaign in the past, the film “explores the abuse of these ancient and intelligent animals and shows how some people are reversing the trend.”

Early in the project, the filmmakers approached IDA for information and we were able to provide a great deal of background and video on a number of elephants, many of whom have been the focus of longstanding IDA campaigns.

According to HBO’s press release, the documentary “describes the often-brutal treatment elephants undergo when they are trained to perform, the psychological trauma they suffer and the physical damage done by inadequate living conditions in some zoos and circuses,” highlighting the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in California, which provides refuge to elephants rescued from zoos and circuses.

IDA strives to protect elephants and raise awareness about the suffering they endure in captivity and the challenges elephants face in the wild. To learn more about how you can help, visit
