Nguyen Tien Tung is just the sort of man you’d expect to run a Hanoi slaughterhouse: wiry, frenetic and filthy, his white T-shirt collaged with bloodstains, his jean shorts loose around taut, scratched-up legs, his feet squelching in plastic sandals. Hunched over his metal stall, between two hanging carcasses and an oversized tobacco pipe, the 42-year-old is surveying his killing station  –  an open-air concrete patio leading on to a busy…

Makris: Elephant Hunting Critics Are Practicing “Animal Racism”

NBC Sports Network host Tony Makris defended his controversial killing of an elephant on an NRA-sponsored hunting show during the September 26 edition of NRA News by claiming that opponents of elephant hunting have a philosophy similar to Hitler’s.

Makris has faced widespread criticism since he shot and killed an elephant on the September 22 episode of Under Wild Skies on NBC Sports, which also showed him celebrating the kill with Champagne. A petition calling for the cancellation of Under Wild Skies, which Makris hosts, currently has more than 47,000 signatures.

Makris has longstanding ties to the NRA. According to the Los Angeles Times, “he helped install Charlton Heston as president” of the NRA in 1998. Makris has also been previously identified as an employee of Ackerman McQueen, an ad agency employed by the NRA for decades that was responsible for a controversial ad that politicized security measures that protect the president’s children.

On the NRA News show Cam & Company, Makris offered a number of rationales for shooting the elephant, including suggesting that people who oppose elephant hunting but accept other forms of hunting are practicing “animal racism.” He added that he would respond to someone who said elephants should not be hunted because of their size, scarcity or intelligence by saying, “Hitler would have said the same thing.”

MAKRIS: The nice ones will come up and go, you shoot elephant? Why? And I said well, the short answer is because hungry people eat them and because I’m a hunter. You know, I’m not an elephant hunter. I’m a hunter. I hunt all things. And they go, well nobody should shoot an elephant. I said, why? And they go they’re so big and kind and gentle and smart and I said, okay, let me ask you a question. Should I be able to shoot birds? Well, I guess that’s okay. Ducks? Yeah. Pigeons? Oh, they’re flying rats, okay. Rabbits? Well rabbits are cute. But yea. Squirrels? That’s nothing but a rat with a tail — with a fuzzy tail. And I said, well deer eat all my mother’s roses in Long Island and I go– so I can shoot all of those, but not an elephant? No. Do you realize that if you subscribe to that philosophy you are committing a very unique form of animal racism?

CAM EDWARDS, HOST: [laughter]

MAKRIS: And now they’re shocked. And they said but they’re so big and special and they’re smarter. And I went, you know, Hitler would have said the same thing. …

What horrors they suffered before they were killed can only be imagined as the country wages warfare on unwanted strays.Their tragedy is repeated across Bucharest, Romania’s capital, where an estimated 64,000 homeless dogs roam, a legacy of former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu’s vanity. At the height of his power, the communist despot bulldozed swathes of the city to build his grandiose palace, forcibly relocating thousands of families into smaller homes. The result was huge numbers of abandoned pets and guard dogs thrown on to the streets.Almost 25 years after his downfall, packs still roam the city and across the country more…

Global partnership formed to save African elephants in protected areas by Staff Writers New York (UPI) Sep 27, 2013

Conservation groups and six African countries committed to protect African elephants, reduce trafficking and lower consumer demand for ivory, organizers said.

The commitment is backed by an $80 million action plan from the United States to strengthen security for elephants in their range while investing more in intelligence networks, customs inspections and consumer education, National Geographic said Thursday in a release.

The Partnership to Save Africa’s Elephants was announced during an event hosted by the Clinton Global Initiative in New York. The partnership is led by five “Commitment Makers” — the Wildlife Conservation Society the African Wildlife Foundation, Conservation International, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and World Wildlife Fund — with “Commitment Partners” support by the National Geographic Society, African Parks Network, Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Frankfurt Zoological Society, Freeland Foundation, Howard Buffett Foundation, International Conservation Caucus Foundation, Save the Elephants, TRAFFIC, WildAid and WildLifeDirect.

Nations joining in commitment include Botswana, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Kenya, South Sudan, Malawi and Uganda.

These funds will be used to support national governments to ramp up anti-poaching enforcement at the 50 priority elephant sites, including hiring and supporting 3,100 more park guards, organizers said. In addition, anti-trafficking efforts will be strengthened by growing intelligence networks, raising penalties for violations, and adding training and sniffer dog teams at 10 key transit points.

Efforts to try to reduce ivory demands will be implemented in 10 consumer markets over the next three years, officials said.

Leaders from African nations also have called upon countries to adopt moratoriums on commercial ivory imports, exports and domestic sales of ivory products until African elephant populations no longer are threatened by poaching.

Swedish team hope to create buzz in fight against bee deaths

Swedish team hope to create buzz in fight against bee deaths by Staff Writers Stockholm (AFP) Sept 27, 2013

Researchers in Sweden said Friday they had developed a new medicine to protect bees from diseases that kill entire populations of the insect in the US and Europe.

A team of microbiologists at Lund University have patented the treatment, known as SymBeeotic — made from lactic acid bacteria from the stomachs of healthy bees — which they described as a major “boost” to bees’ immune system and are hopeful that it could slow down the rate at which bees are dying.

“The bacteria in this product is active against both American and European foulbrood disease,” Dr Alejandra Vasquez, who co-developed the product, told AFP. Foulbrood is the fatal bacterial disease which threatens bees.

“We hope that beekeepers will see this as a good preventative medicine so that they can avoid using antibiotics.”

The researchers, who worked on the medicine for nearly ten years, planned to launch it at an annual conference of beekeepers in Russia on Saturday.

In a statement from the university, co-researcher Dr Tobias Olofsson said it was “the only existing product that boosts bees’ natural immune system”, as resistance to antibiotics grows.

Pesticides, parasites, stress and poor nutrition are believed to be some of the factors causing a deterioration of the immune systems of bees around the world, making them more susceptible to disease.

Roma families face wholesale expulsion from France

This is a deep shame what happens here …

Roma families face wholesale expulsion from France by Staff Writers Paris (UPI) Sep 27, 2013

The latest French government crackdown on the Roma communities in France has drawn protests from rights advocacy groups but not from the European Union itself, which is usually quick on the draw over any human rights controversies outside the EU.

In the most widely reported incident this week police dismantled a Roma settlement in the northern French town of Roubaix. Rights advocacy groups say police patrols routinely harass Roma families, often without provocation.

There was no immediate confirmation of material losses suffered by the displaced Roma families.

The police action against Roma mobile homes on wheels came after Interior Minister Manuel Valls drew criticism for his calls for all Roma to be expelled to East European countries, home to thousands of Roma families.

Valls earlier urged those countries…
