Workers refused to kill ‘fit and healthy’ Jim and Sam just because owners no longer wanted them

Two donkeys have been saved from a Welsh abattoir after staff there refused to kill them.

The two fit and healthy animals were packed off to be slaughtered when their owners decided they wanted to use the field in which they lived for another purpose.

But upon their arrival workers at the abattoir tipped off The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon, and the lives of 10-year-old Jim and five- year-old Sam were saved.

Tamlin Watson, welfare adviser at the sanctuary, said she believed it to be the first time an abattoir had ever turned to them for help.

“We took a call from an abattoir concerned that they had been asked to dispose of two young, healthy animals. Thankfully we managed to talk their owners into signing them over to us and they are now safe in our care,” she said.

“It’s just sad that the owners didn’t want them any more and just decided to get rid of them. So we’re very grateful that we were contacted rather than Jim and Sam simply being destroyed.

“They’re such fit and healthy animals with so much life ahead of them and so much love to give. Both are very sweet and gentle and could make great family pets so we hope to see them go on our foster scheme.”
