CALGARY- A 29-year-old man was handed a two year prison sentence Monday for killing a cat on in an animal abuse case that has shocked Calgarians.
The court heard that in September of 2012, Steven Alcorn stabbed a cat repeatedly before stringing it up in a garage and then having sex with his girlfriend.
Alcorn was also convicted of assaulting his girlfriend several months later as well as breaching a condition of his release.
Psychiatrists who examined Alcorn described him as a sexual sadist with an anti-social personality disorder.
The Crown said it was satisfied with Alcorn’s sentence.
“We’re of the view that this case was serious enough to warrant a very severe sentence,” said Crown prosecutor Gord Haight. “And that’s what the judge thought as well.”
Animal rights activists also applauded the sentence.
