Dear all

In June 2012 an European Citizens’ Initiative “Stop vivisection has been launched having the main objective an European legislative framework aimed at phasing out animal experiments, considering clear ethical objections to animal experiments and solid scientific principles that invalidate the “animal model” for predicting human response. The European Citizens’ Initiative asks the European Commission to eliminate the animal experiments and replace them with alternative methods, non-animal techniques that frequently prove cheaper, quicker, more sensitive, and more adaptable and effective.

1 November is the last day when you can sign saying NO to animal experimentation and urge the European Union to eliminate the animal experiments. 1 million signatures of European citizens are necessary for taking part in legislative decision making process of the European Union.

Please, sign it:

Betreff: animal protection provisions in your national Constitution

Dear all

The Constitution of Romania will be changed. A Commission of 23 members have been formed in this respect. I had already discussions with 2 members asking them in helping to introduce some provisions with regards at animal protection.

We need to sustain this point by having a background of examples.

I need in this respect examples from the rest of countries who have in their national Constitution these kind of provisions.

Therefore, please help us by looking in your Constitution and send me the exact text (your language and English, if possible) that it reffers at animals (mentioning the no. of the article where the texts are). I need it till Saturday evening if posible.

Some tips: probably your Constitution you can find on internet and, as probably is very large and you can not start reading, you can find by searching inside looking for the word “animal”.

Thank you.

All the best

Carmen Arsene

They Taught How to Negate Animal Rights

On March 9, 2012, Missouri (The “Show Me” state)
turned back the clock on animal rights progress.

Missouri State representative Ward Franz introduced
House Bill (HB 1513) which excludes future legislation
that would give rights to animals.

Whip or kick a family dog? Sure, why not. Animals
do not have rights, according to Show-Me state

Beat the cows and pigs before slaughter like the
Chinese do to dogs because adrenaline flavors
meat? Sure, why not? Animals do not have rights,
according to Show-Me state politicos.

Language included in the proposed bill:

“The laws of this state shall not confer upon any
animal a right, privilege, or legal status that is
equivalent or that exceeds a right, privilege, or
legal status as that which this state confers by
law upon a human being.”

Ward Franz is a real American. At a recent
fundraiser, he offered Missouri supporters a
chance to own one of these show-me-state tools:

Who is Ward Franz? Representative Franz attended
Southwest Missouri Baptist University and is employed
by the state of Missouri as a Juvenile officer. Last
year, after his 18-year-old son was arrested for
stealing a Taco Bell sign, Franz called in favors so
that his son was charged as a juvenile and got off
with community service. Nobody messes with a guy who
raffles off assault rifles.

The same day that Missouri’s proposed animal-wrongs
bill was introduced, The editor of an online dairy
website (Dairy Herd Network, Tom Quaife) wrote:

“Take the threat of agroterrorism seriously”

In Tom Quaife’s Dairy Herd Network editorial, we read:

“Since 2005, I have had the opportunity to attend four
conferences on agroterrorism sponsored by the Federal
Bureau of Investigation. They are serious affairs,
considering the subject matter…An intentional attack
on the food supply could cost billions of dollars and
undermine public confidence.”

Note to animal rights activists: If you belong to
an animal rights or vegetarian organization, be
cautious of that new radical member. He is there to
entrap you and score points for his miserable career
which views honorable and ethical vegans as America’s
worst form of terrorist. Like generals leading troops
during the Viet Nam war, exaggerated body counts were
essential tools which continued an unjust war. Today’s
new unjust war is the one America is waging against
those who would see animals treated with compassion.

PRESS-RELEASE: A Bitter-Sweet Betrayal: Dogs, Rabbits & Rats Killed to Test `New´ Sweetener

home >> news

Monday, 6th February

A British animal testing laboratory is at the center of controversy after it was revealed that dogs, rabbits and rats were killed to test sweetener which is essentially already on the market. UK-based Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS), Europe’s most exposed animal testing laboratory [1] carried out the tests which resulted in the suffering and deaths of over 480 animals.

In a series of shocking experiments which came to light in late 2011, a sweetener known as Advantame was force fed to over 44 dogs, nearly 100 rabbits and 360 rats, ultimately resulting in all being killed after months or years. In an additionally cruel twist, the sweetener tested was not even a ‘new’ product – having been derived directly from aspartame – another sweetener which has been tested extensively and is already widely consumed by the public [2]. Experiments were funded and carried out by the Japanese company, Ajinomoto Co.

A total of three experiments were carried out on dogs at HLS in Suffolk, the third being the high dosage experimental procedure. A total of 44 puppies (aged between 22 – 26 weeks) were packed into crates and shipped into HLS from a beagle breeder in the USA. Upon arrival, they were divided up and kept inside metal cages while being force fed varying dosages of Advantame sweetener. The dogs remained in such conditions for a full year. Each dog, no matter what health condition, was then killed following the experiment at just over 13 months of age [3].

Additionally, a group of 96 rabbits from Highgate Farm, Lincolnshire were kept in solitary confinement inside plastic cages and impregnated on arrival at HLS, Suffolk. After one week, the administration of Advantame began using a procedure known as ‘oral gavage’ – forcing a tube down the rabbits’ throats in order to pour concentrations of the substance straight to the stomach. Naturally, this method of administering substances is extremely traumatic for animals who are shy and gentle by nature. One rabbit died of this procedure alone – she was “killed after showing convulsion-like signs, vocalization, and respiratory distress shortly after dosing … This death was considered to arise from difficulties during the gavage dosing”. Later during the experiment, a further five rabbits were killed due to adverse health problems and several rabbits aborted their unborn litters. The shocking document goes on to reveal that approximately 20% of the pregnant female rabbits receiving the highest dose of Advantame became so ill that they had to be killed before the scheduled date. At the end of the designated experiment, all survivors and their unborn babies were killed [4].

Several separate experiments were carried out on rats for Advantame. One particular experiment involved forcibly impregnating young female rats and killing their babies after a short exposure to the sweetener. Experiments began when the rats were only 6 weeks old. The female rats were impregnated and their babies then added to the experiment once born. Those females that did not mate with a male by day 25 were killed, and those that did not give birth after another 25 days were also killed. In addition, mothers who lost their litters before day 21 of lactation were killed. All mothers were eventually killed during the study, and the babies killed at 14 days old by being gassed to death. During the time they were allowed to live, the rats and their young were fed varying concentrations of Advantame [5].

Says Debbie Vincent of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty: “it is quite unthinkable that in 2012, companies such as HLS deem it acceptable to use and kill animals for the sake of testing something as senseless as another sweetener, which is already consumed by the public. Each of these experiments details immense suffering and loss of life. The general public have had enough of these ruthless, outdated and cruel experiments and are rightfully outraged at the prospect of such a pointless product being the cause of so many individuals to be killed. These experiments are unacceptable, unethical and unscientific – and need to end – now.”

Notes for editors:

Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS)

HLS are Europe’s largest and most exposed animal research laboratory who kill 500 animals every day in cruel unnecessary tests. Recent experiments at HLS include ingredients for Splenda coffee sweetener [6], cleaning products [7], mushroom extract [8] and fermented vegetables [9]. They were famously exposed in 1997 when Channel 4 filmed HLS workers punching beagle puppies in the face, but since then they have been exposed a further seven times for animal cruelty, showing workers dealing with animals whilst drunk, cutting open a monkey whilst still alive, hitting and abusing dogs, falsifying test data, and many more breaches of the most basic animal welfare laws. As such, HLS are the most exposed animal testing facility in the world.

Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC)

SHAC was formed in 1999 with the sole aim of closing down HLS. The campaign operates by targeting the structures which hold HLS up – financial, customers and suppliers. SHAC is a voluntary, grass-roots organization with no paid members. There are SHAC activist groups present in many countries around the world, and carry out demonstrations at a variety of targets, all linked to HLS.
